What: 2026 Master Plan Community Open House
When: Tuesday, July 21, from 4:00–7:00 p.m.
Where: City of Lathrup Village City Hall, 27400 Southfield Road, Lathrup Village, MI 48076
I really encourage residents to attend Lathrup Village’s Master Plan Community Open House next Tuesday.
You may have heard about the Master Plan over the past year, or taken part in one or more of the online community surveys, and thought that the Master Plan was already being written or that it will simply be a rollup of the survey results.
But in fact, we are just arriving at the midway point in the process – where planning shifts from information gathering to developing concrete recommendations – and those recommendations haven’t been made yet!
And while surveys are an important input to the plan, they’re not the only input. Tuesday’s Open House gives residents an opportunity to review the survey results, ask questions, provide additional perspective, and help determine how the results should be interpreted and incorporated into the Master Plan.
Members of the Planning Commission, City Council, and the City’s planning consultants will be present throughout the event. And because the Planning Commission plays the leading role in preparing and recommending the Master Plan before it comes to City Council, this is an excellent opportunity to share your thoughts while the planning process is still underway.
This is an open house, so residents can stop by at any time between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. so please come for whatever amount of time you can. (Also note that Mayor Bruce Kantor will deliver the State of the City Address live at the Open House beginning at 5:30 p.m.)
The Master Plan is reviewed once every five years, so this is a significant opportunities to help shape Lathrup Village’s long-term direction. I hope you’ll come and join the conversation.
What Is the City’s Master (Comprehensive) Plan?
The Master Plan is the City’s long-range planning guide. It serves as the framework for future decisions about land use, housing, redevelopment, transportation, parks, and other issues that will shape Lathrup Village for years to come.
Michigan law requires communities with planning commissions to review their Master Plan at least every five years to ensure it continues to reflect the community’s goals. Lathrup Village is also updating its five-year Parks & Recreation Plan, which is required to maintain eligibility for many Michigan Department of Natural Resources recreation grants.
Because both planning efforts are being conducted together, the term **Comprehensive Plan** is often used to describe the overall project. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, the Comprehensive Plan in this case includes both the City’s Master Plan and its Parks & Recreation Plan.
